“God, I don’t know what you’re doing here. What am I supposed to do?”“God, why is this happening to them?”“God, why is this happening to me?”If you’ve ever brought one of these questions to the Lord in prayer, you’re not alone. Sometimes, hard things happen, and they can be difficult to face or understand. When you’re wondering what God’s plan for you is and what your next step should be, start by following the suggestions below.Find a Listening EarYou never have to suffer alone. Whether it’s a friend, your priest, a counselor, or a family member, God will always help you find someone who is ready to provide a listening ear and share your burden. Consider what you need before you choose this person. If you seek confidentiality, make sure it’s someone you trust; if you seek accountability, find someone who will consistently check on you; if you seek wisdom, talk to someone who’s experienced, patient, and listens well.Ask for PrayersSometimes, we can forget how powerful prayer really is. While we often don’t see immediate, tangible answers from God, know that He hears you and His heart breaks with yours. Praying regularly helps relieve you from burdens that were never yours to carry. If you’re struggling to pray alone, seek spiritual guidance and ask those you trust to pray with you or for you.Turn to the BibleIt can be immensely reassuring to find a Bible verse that’s perfectly applicable for you. It’s as though God is speaking directly to you about your situation, providing comfort through words written thousands of years ago. Write this scripture down and post it somewhere you can always see it to remind yourself that God is present through your struggles and confusion.Sit With JesusEven if you are feeling frustrated with God, make time for Mass every week. It’s important to continue talking to Him throughout your frustration, knowing that staying silent never fixes any problems. Make a point to attend Adoration as well if you need the extra time in His presence. Let Go and Trust in the LordWe must recognize that the world is full of things that are simply out of our control. In cases where we cannot change or control the outcome, we need to trust that God is guiding us. In order to find peace in challenging times, we must practice surrendering our grief, anger, and worries to Him. At our Polk County Catholic schools, we foster an atmosphere of care and an environment of high expectations and effective discipline.
