Understanding the world we live in now requires looking at where we come from. That’s why at Polk County private schools, we think it’s important to celebrate National Senior Citizens Day on August 21st! Help your little ones appreciate the senior citizens in their lives and community. Acknowledge What Senior Citizens Have Done for the CommunitySpend some time talking to your little one about senior citizens — specifically, talk to them about the seniors in their lives. Perhaps they have a retired volunteer in their classroom, or they look forward to seeing the older cashier at the grocery store every week. It’s helpful to talk to your little one about a senior citizen’s life, journey, and encourage him to ask them questions! Ask him what struggles he thinks seniors might have gone through during their lives, how they’ve changed society for the better, and what they deserve from the community as they age.Volunteer at a Retirement Home or Assisted Living CommunityVolunteering is a great experience for any child. Point out local assisted living homes to your child, and bring up the topic of volunteering. You could start a new volunteering commitment together and make it part of your weekly routine. Nursing homes often have lots of volunteers and carolers during the holiday months, but fewer visitors outside of those months. By spending an hour or two with residents every week, he can learn their stories and appreciate their role in society.Spend Extra Time with GrandparentsAn easy way to celebrate National Senior Citizens Day is by spending extra time with the seniors in your life. Help your child plan a special day out with her grandparents! Let her take the reins by picking a restaurant and an activity. When she takes initiative in planning an activity for her grandparents, she’ll have pride in her work and be more engaged in the outing.National Senior Citizens Day is August 21, and it’s an excellent reminder to show love and kindness to the older members of society.
