Random Act of Kindness Day

National Random Act of Kindness Day is on February 17th and the schools in Polk County have ways your child can give back! Now is such an important time to teach your child about kindness, and our schools want families to understand the value of service. Here are some ideas for acts of kindness for your child to do!

Buy Lunch for the Homeless
Food is often considered the most important gift you can give a homeless person. Search for homeless shelters in your area. Once you and your child choose one, give them a call and ask if you can bring food for the residents. If this goes beyond your budget, you can also buy a meal for a homeless person nearby.

Compliment Strangers
Being kind to someone you don’t know is an act of God. He is in every compliment you give someone. Make a stranger feel special by complimenting them, like “You look nice today!” or “I like your shoes!” Giving someone a positive reminder doesn’t have to be done verbally. You can even leave kindness stones at the park! Showing your child that compliments cost nothing and can mean the world to someone is one of the best ways to raise a human being.

Treat Service People Well
The service industry is tough, and representatives are often dealing with the day-to-day struggles of the job. Bring your child with you when you run your errands. At the bank, give candy to the teller. At the post office, compliment the postal worker. At restaurants, be courteous to your server and leave a nice tip. Your child will see all of these actions and it will show her how to behave in the everyday world.

Send a Gift to Teachers
Your child spends a lot of time with her teachers. It’s important to remind the teachers that they are appreciated. A simple bouquet of flowers, fruit basket, or even just a card is a sweet gesture that shows the teachers your family values them for everything they do.

Say Thank You
Military members, first responders, police officers, and other strong people in uniform sacrifice their lives every single day for our freedom. While out with your child, say hello and thank you to every service member you come across. Something as small as a hello can go a long way for the brave men and women in uniform.
