Wondering how to explain the rosary to your little ones? With this fun and educational craft, not only can you introduce your child to the rosary and our devotion to Mother Mary, but you can teach them the basic parts of a decade in the rosary as well. This way, you can begin to incorporate more prayer into their lives!

Supplies You’ll Need

  • Pipe cleaners

  • Pony beads

How to Make Your Rosary

  1. Have your child thread 10 beads on to a pipe cleaner. As they do so, let them know that these will be the 10 Hail Mary beads. Push all of the beads towards the center of the pipe.

  2. Twist the two ends of the pipe cleaner together, right after the point where the beads end on either side, creating a small circle of beads with a long tail.

  3. If the two ends of the pipe cleaner do not align, go ahead and line them up now. Then insert another bead through both ends – this is the Our Father and Glory Be bead. For clarity, use a different color or size bead for this.

  4. Start your cross by first threading two beads through both pipe cleaner ends – these should be the same color/size as your Hail Mary beads.

  5. Bend one of the pipe cleaners to the left, and then a smaller section over to the right, so that it forms an even horizontal line across your vertical pipe cleaner.

  6. Thread beads onto the horizontal pipe cleaner on either side of the vertical pipe cleaner, making sure to fill the whole pipe cleaner as much as possible.*

  7. Thread three beads onto the vertical pipe cleaner.*

*If your beads are large enough that they keep falling off your pipe cleaner, bend the ends of your pipe cleaner to hold the beads in place.

After your child has finished his or her rosary, offer to pray with them each night. Since it might seem daunting to recite the entire thing, especially at first, suggest starting with little pieces here and there until they understand each part of the rosary and its importance to our faith.
