Summer is the perfect time for you and your child to get involved in the community and spread the love of God. We’ve collected a few ideas for fun, easy service projects that will help your child become more compassionate and knowledgeable about the struggles of the world around him. On-the-Go Bags for the HomelessFill bags with helpful items to pass out to those in need around your city. Backpacks are perfect! Make sure to include non-perishable items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, socks, shampoo, soap, chapstick, or feminine hygiene items. It’s also great to include plastic rain ponchos, chewing gum, granola bars, an emergency space blanket, deodorant, peanut butter, and reusable eating utensils.I-Spy Bottles for Children’s HospitalsFill glass jars or old water bottles with rice and tiny trinkets to keep children at hospitals occupied with a fun, simple game. Make sure each bottle comes with an “I Spy” checklist so children know what they’re looking for, and super glue the lids on to all the bottles so nothing comes out!Keep Children FedParticipate in or organize a project in your neighborhood to collect food items for children in low-income homes who would normally receive free breakfasts and lunches through school. This is a wonderful way to teach your child how to coordinate and initiate his own service projects, as well as remind him that need is not always visible.Thank You CookiesHave your child write thank-you notes to those members of your community whose services often go unrecognized: mailmen, firefighters, policemen, garbage collectors, and others you or your child might think is deserving of praise and thanks. Bake some delicious cookies to pair with your notes! Encourage him to actually be the one who hands over the notes and treats.Foster a BirthdayHelp your child make and write birthday cards for children living in the foster system who may not get to celebrate with anyone this year. If your local foster agency allows, you and your child can also bake goodies to give as gifts! Interview a GrandparentHave your child call or visit one of his grandparents to interview them about their life. Your child will love spending some special, extra time with his grandparent, and their grandparent will love sharing their story! At Lakeland Catholic schools, we foster an atmosphere of care and an environment of high expectations and effective discipline.
