Celebrating World Poetry Day
Show your child the importance of the written word on March 21st by celebrating World Poetry Day! Teach her the power and beauty that poetry offers, and show her how it helps us understand words and the world. Here’s why the schools in Polk County want your family to celebrate this momentous holiday!
Language Development
Your child will make it a habit to read different types of text, including her poems. Poetry helps language development by building on reading, writing, listening, speaking, and language skills. Poems are often read aloud and repeated, allowing her the ability to remember the words. Allow her to read to you for a bonding moment and practice. Play poetry in the car or while she’s doing her chores so she can build on her listening skills. She’ll listen to the rhymes and rhythms and, as a result, her fluency will improve.
Reading Comprehension
When reading, these literacy skills will smooth out your child’s comprehension, resulting in discussions about meaning, visualization, and connection. Tell her to imagine the poetry come to life as she reads each line. Her imagination will draw images in her mind, and she will be able to focus and understand. The hope is that she’ll form a love for reading!
Developmental Benefits
Writing poetry is a form of self-expression that everyone needs, including your child. When writing, your child has an outlet for sharing her thoughts and feelings about the world around her. When she boosts her language development and reading compression, she builds her confidence. Who knows? Maybe she will fall in love with poetry so much and take up a literary education rich in poetry in high school and college!
Inspire Poetry-Writing Activities
After getting enwrapped in the poems she reads, she will probably feel inspired to write her own! Encourage her newly-sparked interest by giving her writing activities. As early as children begin to write, they should try poetry. Plan and brainstorm ideas with her and provide practice templates. Once she’s all done, display them with pride on the refrigerator or in her room!
