Rainy Day? Here’s the Perfect Family Movie Marathon

Florida is well known for its afternoon showers, but sometimes, the Sunshine State does not live up to its name for days at a time. Trying to find activities for your children enrolled in schools in Polk County that engage and teach valuable lessons is difficult when all they want to do is go outside. Rather than struggling with, “I’m bored,” and, “What is there to do,” give yourself and your family a mini-vacation on the couch with a series of good movies and a batch of popcorn. Not all movies are created equally, and the Diocese of Orlando has a short list of classic movies with positive life lessons.BabeTraining a pig to be a sheep herder sounds far-fetched, but watch what Babe is able to accomplish! This film teaches courtesy, tenacity, and believing in others. The Lion KingWatch Simba take on the world – and his uncle – as he grows more independent by the day and creates friendships with the most unlikely of animals. This film demonstrates love, responsibility, courage, and strength of character.Beauty and the BeastBelle is imprisoned in a castle under a spell that turns the servants into everyday objects, such as candelabras and wardrobes. The prince has been transformed into a hideous beast with the only cure being a kiss of true love. As time runs short, can Belle change the Beast from a hard-hearted monster into a compassionate human? Kindness, faith, and tolerance reign in this supreme movie. It’s a Wonderful LifeGeorge Bailey believes his life is rather worthless until an angel, Clarence, demonstrates how the lives of the citizens in his town would have fared without his presence. A strong dose of responsibility and duty permeate this film.Pay it ForwardFor the teen crowd, this film is based on the premise that if you perform a random act of kindness for someone with no strings attached, they will, in turn, share a kindness (pay it forward) to someone else in need. With lessons in kindness, warmth, generosity, and gratitude, you are sure to remember this film.Remember the TitansFor teen viewers and adults, this movie is based on a true story of the 1971 segregation of a Virginia high school. Their football team, the Titans, is led by an African American coach who is hired over a white coach. Together the two coaches become the symbol of racial unity. Look for themes of tolerance, loyalty, and integrity as you watch this with your family.Take a look at your video collection, visit the library, or order a streaming video of any of these classics. The important takeaway is to watch the movie as a family and discuss the values afterward, asking for examples and explaining parts your children may have found confusing.
